The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a 555-foot (169 m) marble obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to honor George Washington and completed in 1884. For five years it was the tallest structure in the world, and it remains the tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk. A visible change in the marble's color about a third of the way up marks where construction paused for two decades during and after the Civil War.
