The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., a Greek Doric temple of white marble completed in 1922 and housing Daniel Chester French's 19-foot seated statue of Abraham Lincoln. Its 36 exterior columns represent the states in the Union at Lincoln's death. The steps have been the stage for landmark moments in American history, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.
