A painted hillside of folk-art devotion
Salvation Mountain is a hand-built hillside of adobe, straw, and half a million gallons of donated paint near Niland, California, on the edge of the Salton Sea. Created over decades by folk artist Leonard Knight as a monument to his faith, its brilliant colors and the words "God Is Love" have made it a pilgrimage for road-trippers and a recognized work of American folk art.
