A faded Salton Sea resort turned art colony
Bombay Beach, on the shore of California's Salton Sea, was a 1950s and 60s resort town that decayed as the accidental inland sea grew salty and its beaches turned to fish bones and ruin. Once home to a few thousand people, it shrank to a few hundred amid half-sunken buildings. In recent years artists have transformed the wreckage into an open-air installation and an annual art festival, giving the semi-ghost town a strange second life.
