The Overseas Highway
The road that hops across the Florida Keys
The Overseas Highway carries U.S. Route 1 about 113 miles (182 km) from the Florida mainland out to Key West, hopping from island to island across the Florida Keys on a chain of some 42 bridges over open water. Built on the roadbed of Henry Flagler's railroad — destroyed by a 1935 hurricane — it includes the landmark Seven Mile Bridge and offers travelers the sensation of driving across the sea toward the southernmost point of the continental United States.
