Yucca Mountain
The stalled nuclear-waste repository
Yucca Mountain, a remote desert ridge in southern Nevada near the former nuclear test site, was for decades the designated site for a deep geological repository to store the nation's high-level nuclear waste. Miles of tunnels were bored into the ridge, but fierce political and scientific opposition stalled the project, and it has never opened. The restricted site sits in limbo, a monument to the unsolved problem of nuclear-waste storage.
