A preserved Montana gold-rush capital
Virginia City, Montana, sprang up after an 1863 gold strike in Alder Gulch and briefly served as the territorial capital, swelling toward 10,000 people. As the placer gold gave out the town shrank, but rather than vanish it was preserved: today it is a National Historic Landmark district of original 1860s buildings kept as a living museum.
