The United States Capitol

The United States Capitol crowns Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the meeting place of the U.S. Congress. Its great cast-iron dome, completed during the Civil War and topped by the Statue of Freedom, is one of the most recognized symbols of American government. The neoclassical building has been burned by the British in 1814, expanded repeatedly, and serves as the point from which the city's quadrants are measured.
