Trinity Site
Where the first atomic bomb was detonated
Trinity Site, on the White Sands Missile Range in the New Mexico desert, is the exact spot where the world's first nuclear device was detonated at dawn on July 16, 1945. The blast fused the desert sand into a mildly radioactive green glass called trinitite and opened the atomic age. A small stone obelisk marks ground zero, on land that is otherwise a restricted military range and is opened to the public only a couple of days a year.
