San Francisco's tapering spire
The Transamerica Pyramid is a 853-foot (260 m) tapering white skyscraper in San Francisco's Financial District, completed in 1972 and the tallest building in the city for over four decades. Its distinctive four-sided pyramidal shape, designed to let more light reach the streets below, made it an instantly recognizable symbol of San Francisco despite early controversy over its unconventional form.
