The White House

The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., has been the residence and workplace of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. Designed by James Hoban in a neoclassical style, its white-painted sandstone exterior gave it the name that became official in the early 20th century. Burned by British troops in 1814 and rebuilt, it contains the Oval Office and the residence, and is among the most photographed buildings in the country.
