The Pentagon
The headquarters of the U.S. military
The Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac from Washington, is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and one of the largest office buildings in the world. Built during World War II and completed in 1943, its five-sided, five-ring, five-story design houses tens of thousands of military and civilian personnel. A secure and heavily guarded facility, its name has become shorthand for the American military establishment itself.
