South Pass City
A Wyoming gold town near the Oregon Trail
South Pass City, Wyoming, boomed to around 2,000 people after an 1867 gold strike near South Pass, the broad saddle over the Continental Divide used by the Oregon and California trails. The gold was shallow and the boom brief, but the town is tied to a milestone: it was here that Wyoming Territory's women first exercised the vote after suffrage passed in 1869. It is preserved today as a State Historic Site.
