A neon roadside empire on Interstate 95
South of the Border is a sprawling, kitschy rest-stop attraction on Interstate 95 at the North Carolina–South Carolina line, near Hamer, South Carolina. Opened in the 1950s and themed loosely around a Mexican fiesta, it is announced for a hundred miles by punning billboards and crowned by "Sombrero Tower," a 200-foot observation tower shaped like a sombrero. It is a quintessential piece of American highway kitsch.
