Republic of Molossia
A backyard micronation in the Nevada desert
Micronation since 1977
The Republic of Molossia is a self-declared nation of a few acres of high desert near Dayton, Nevada, east of Carson City. It began in 1977 as a boyhood game, the Grand Republic of Vuldstein, invented by Kevin Baugh and a friend, and was refounded on Baugh's property in 1998. Baugh serves as its president, often in a military-style uniform, and the republic claims around 35 citizens.
Like most micronations, Molossia is part satire and part hobby. It issues a currency called the valora, bans plastic bags, incandescent light bulbs and, for reasons of its own, catfish and walruses, and still claims to be at war with East Germany, a country that ceased to exist in 1990. No government recognizes it, and in practice the land remains part of Lyon County, Nevada, but it has become one of the best-known micronations in the world.
