The Port of Savannah, on the Savannah River in Georgia, is one of the busiest container ports in the United States and home to Garden City Terminal - the largest single container terminal in North America. Ships sail about 18 miles up the tidal river from the Atlantic to reach its wall of towering ship-to-shore cranes.

Its explosive growth has made Savannah the main Atlantic gateway for the fast-growing Southeast, handling goods bound for warehouses across the region. The shipping channel has been deepened to take the largest vessels now able to transit the expanded Panama Canal.
