Pine Ridge Reservation
Oglala Lakota homeland and the site of Wounded Knee
The Pine Ridge Reservation covers about 4,300 square miles of prairie, pine-covered ridges and badlands in southwestern South Dakota, home of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The Oglala Lakota are one of the bands of the Lakota, and the reservation was carved out of the Great Sioux Reservation by an act of Congress in 1889, after the federal government seized the Black Hills, which the Lakota have never accepted payment for. The tribal seat is the town of Pine Ridge, and Oglala Lakota College, founded in 1971, serves the reservation.
On December 29, 1890, U.S. Army troops killed between about 150 and 300 Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee Creek, one of the most notorious massacres in American history. In 1973, activists of the American Indian Movement and Oglala residents occupied the village of Wounded Knee for 71 days. In 2022 the Oglala and Cheyenne River tribes bought land next to the massacre site to protect it as sacred ground. The tribe also co-manages the Stronghold Unit of Badlands National Park.
