California State Route 1 — the Pacific Coast Highway — hugs the state's coastline for about 656 miles (1,055 km), from Southern California north past Los Angeles, Big Sur, and the Monterey Peninsula toward Mendocino. Its most celebrated stretch winds along the cliffs of Big Sur, where the road clings to steep mountainsides above the crashing Pacific, crossing landmark spans like Bixby Creek Bridge.
