The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on the National Mall preserves the material record of the American past and drew about 2.1 million visitors in 2024. Its treasures include the original Star-Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814, along with the Ruby Slippers, Lincoln's hat, and countless artifacts of daily life and invention.
