The Mystery Spot
A tilted-cabin gravity illusion
The Mystery Spot, in the redwoods above Santa Cruz, California, is a classic "gravity hill" tourist attraction opened in 1940, where a tilted cabin and cleverly slanted surroundings create dizzying illusions — balls appear to roll uphill and people seem to stand at impossible angles. One of many such roadside "vortex" attractions, it remains among the most famous, its bumper stickers a fixture of West Coast cars.
