The Metropolitan Museum of Art
America's largest and most-visited art museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art — the Met — stands on the eastern edge of Central Park on Manhattan's Museum Mile, the largest art museum in the United States and one of the most visited in the world, drawing about 5.7 million visitors in 2024. Its collection spans more than 5,000 years, from ancient Egyptian temples and Greek statuary to European masters and modern American art.
Founded in 1870, the Met occupies a sprawling Beaux-Arts building whose galleries include the reconstructed Temple of Dendur and vast wings of arms and armor, musical instruments, and costume. A second site, the Met Cloisters in northern Manhattan, houses medieval European art.
