Kirtland Temple
The first temple of the Latter Day Saint movement
The Kirtland Temple, a white, steepled building on a rise east of Cleveland, Ohio, was the first temple built by the followers of Joseph Smith. Church members, few of them wealthy, built it with their own labor between 1833 and 1836, and by tradition they crushed glassware and pottery into the stucco to make the walls glitter. It was dedicated on March 27, 1836, and early Latter Day Saints reported visions and spiritual manifestations during the ceremonies that followed.
Within two years most of the faithful had left Kirtland for Missouri, and the temple's ownership passed through a long tangle of court sales and claims. The Reorganized Church, now Community of Christ, held it for more than a century. In March 2024, Community of Christ sold the temple, along with historic sites in Nauvoo, Illinois, and a trove of documents and artifacts, to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for $192.5 million, reuniting the building with the largest branch of the movement. It offers free public tours.
