Alaska's abandoned copper company town
Kennecott (also spelled Kennicott) is an abandoned copper-mining company town deep in the mountains of Wrangell–St. Elias National Park in Alaska. From 1911 to 1938 its mill processed some of the richest copper ore ever found, and its distinctive fourteen-story red mill building still stands against the glaciers. When the copper ran out the town was abandoned almost overnight, and it is now a National Historic Landmark reached by a long gravel road.
