Once Nevada's largest city
Goldfield, Nevada, exploded after a 1902 gold strike to become the largest city in the state, with around 20,000 people, grand hotels, and its own stock exchange. The gold thinned within a decade and fires and floods finished the decline, leaving a shrunken town of a few hundred residents amid stone ruins and a famous, reputedly haunted hotel.
