Fort Detrick
The center of U.S. biodefense research
Fort Detrick, in Frederick, Maryland, is a U.S. Army installation that has long been the hub of the nation's biological research — home to the former offensive biological-weapons program until it was ended in 1969, and today to high-containment biodefense laboratories such as USAMRIID. Its maximum-containment labs handle the world's most dangerous pathogens under tight security and public scrutiny.
