Calico, in the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California, boomed as a silver-mining camp in the 1880s before the price of silver collapsed and emptied it. Restored in the 1950s by Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm, it is now a county regional park and a popular "living" ghost town of weathered and rebuilt storefronts.
