Bohemian Grove
The secretive elite retreat in the redwoods
Bohemian Grove is a private campground of some 2,700 acres of old-growth redwoods near Monte Rio in Sonoma County, California, owned by the Bohemian Club of San Francisco. Each July it hosts a two-week, men-only summer encampment that has drawn presidents, business leaders, and cultural figures since the late 1800s. The gathering is intensely private — closed to the public and the press — and its rituals, including a torchlit "Cremation of Care" ceremony beneath a large owl statue, have made it a fixture of political folklore.
