The Beartooth Highway climbs 68 miles (109 km) of U.S. Route 212 across the Montana–Wyoming line toward the northeast entrance of Yellowstone, switchbacking up to the Beartooth Pass at nearly 11,000 feet. Once called "the most beautiful drive in America," it crosses a high plateau of alpine lakes, snowfields, and tundra, open only in the warm months.
