Aspen
High Rocky Mountain resort town and former silver camp
Aspen, Colorado
Aspen is a small, famous resort town high in the Colorado Rockies, set in a glacial valley of the Roaring Fork River at nearly 8,000 feet, ringed by the snow-capped Elk Mountains. Born as a silver-mining boomtown in the 1880s, it reinvented itself in the mid-20th century as a world-renowned ski destination and cultural retreat.
Four ski mountains surround the town, and the surrounding White River National Forest holds some of the most photographed peaks in the country, including the Maroon Bells. The thin mountain air, alpine setting, and concentration of wealth have made Aspen shorthand for the American luxury mountain town.
