Animas Forks
A ghost town above 11,000 feet
Animas Forks, high in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado at over 11,000 feet, was a silver- and gold-mining camp of a few hundred people in the 1880s. Brutal winters — one 1884 storm buried it for weeks — and the fading of the mines emptied it. Several weathered buildings still stand on the alpine tundra, reached by rugged mountain roads, making it one of the highest ghost towns in the country.
