The Northeast
The Census region of New England and the Mid-Atlantic
The Northeast is the smallest of the four U.S. Census regions by area, yet among the most densely populated - nine states running from Maine down to Pennsylvania, split by the Census Bureau into the New England and Mid-Atlantic divisions. It holds the historic core of the country, from the first colonies and the Revolution to the early national capitals, and the dense Boston-to-Washington corridor along its coast is one of the most heavily urbanized stretches on Earth.
Geographically it runs from the rocky shores and forested mountains of New England across the Appalachian ridges to the broad rivers and great harbors of the Mid-Atlantic. Despite its small size it contains New York City, the nation's largest, and an outsized concentration of finance, higher education, and government. Cold, snowy winters, humid summers, brilliant autumn foliage, and a long Atlantic coastline define the region.
