The Space Needle

Seattle's flying-saucer tower

Seattle, Washington

The Space Needle rises 605 feet (184 m) over Seattle, a slender tripod topped by a flying-saucer disk that has defined the city's skyline since it was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Its futuristic Space Age design captured the optimism of the era, and its observation deck and rotating restaurant made it an instant icon of the Pacific Northwest.

A 2018 renovation added tilting glass walls and the world's first rotating glass floor. On clear days the deck looks out over Elliott Bay, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, and Mount Rainier to the south.
