Port of Charleston
South Carolina's deep-water Atlantic container port
The Port of Charleston, on the South Carolina coast where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet the Atlantic, is one of the busiest container ports on the U.S. Southeast coast. Charleston Harbor is naturally deep, and dredging has made it the deepest harbor on the East Coast, able to take the largest container ships at any tide.
The port has grown with the booming manufacturing and distribution of the Carolinas, including auto and aircraft plants in the region, and serves as a key Atlantic gateway for cargo moving inland by rail and highway.
