The Port of Baltimore lies far up Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Patapsco River in Maryland, one of the most inland major seaports on the East Coast - a position that puts it closer to the Midwest than any other Atlantic port. It is the nation's leading port for automobiles and roll-on/roll-off cargo such as farm and construction machinery.

Its sheltered, deep berths handle cars, heavy equipment, and bulk goods, and its inland location shortens the overland haul to the central United States. The harbor is crossed by the Francis Scott Key Bridge, whose 2024 collapse after a ship strike briefly closed the shipping channel.
