The Empire State Building
The Art Deco tower that defined the skyline
Manhattan, New York City
The Empire State Building rises 1,454 feet (443 m) to the tip of its antenna over midtown Manhattan, an Art Deco landmark that was the tallest building in the world from its completion in 1931 until 1970. Built in just 410 days during the Great Depression, its limestone-and-steel setback silhouette became the definitive image of the New York skyline.
Its 86th- and 102nd-floor observatories draw millions of visitors a year, and the tower's upper floors are lit in changing colors to mark holidays and events. It has starred in countless films, most famously as the perch of King Kong.
