Detroit-Windsor Tunnel
An underwater road crossing to Canada
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel runs beneath the Detroit River to connect downtown Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario - one of the few underwater vehicle crossings on the U.S.-Canada border. Opened in 1930, it carries passenger cars between the two downtowns and is, oddly, one of the only places where you cross from the U.S. into Canada by traveling south.
It complements the nearby Ambassador Bridge, together forming the busiest commercial border crossing between the two countries, vital to the auto industry that straddles the river.
