Dinosaurs and dioramas on Central Park West
The American Museum of Natural History occupies a vast complex on Central Park West in Manhattan, one of the largest natural-history museums in the world with about 3.9 million visitors in 2024. Its halls of dinosaur fossils, the 94-foot blue whale model, the Rose Center for Earth and Space, and its classic wildlife dioramas have made it a New York institution since 1869.
The museum holds more than 30 million specimens and artifacts, only a fraction on display, and is a major center of scientific research. A 2023 addition, the Gilder Center, added new galleries and an insectarium.
